Is it a sin to be single?

Adeem Younis is the founder of one of the world’s largest and most successful Muslim marriage websites. As a follower of Islam Adeem believes that Allah has created a soulmate for everybody, therefore there is no reason that any Muslim should ever remain single.

Anthropology undergraduate Michelle Albiston iterated the traditional remarks that bind a Muslim man and women in marriage, called a nitka. After the third reply, Michelle Albiston became Michelle Anwar, wife to Muhammad Sajid Anwar.

Second (or more) wives club aims to solve the problem of spinsterhood.

The wedding of Muhammad Hajaya last week was an unusual event. In the southern city of Karak, 170 miles south of the capital Amman, the Jordanian agricultural engineer married his third wife to make a political point: "polygamy is good".

Polygamy is legal in Jordan, but rarely practiced. Frustrated with the growing problem of single women who can’t find mates, Hajaya established the Association to Advocate Polygamy. In its founding statement, the association said it wished to collect money in order to hold mass weddings and combat the mounting cost of dowries, which it claimed prevents men from marrying.

A poll taken last year by SingleMuslim.com of its members found that a majority acknowledged that Islamic law permitted it but only a third would enter such a marriage personally. A large majority of women respondents said they would never choose it.

Adeem Younis first thought of creating a very specific site when he was a student at Leeds University.

Now in its tenth year SingleMuslim.com was set up specifically to facilitate marriages for followers of Islam.

It's an unlikely venue for romance. The generic conference centre that is hosting the latest function by Muslim Marriage Events is in gritty east London and has one of the capital's busiest arterial routes with its thunderous roar outside.

The UK-based matrimonial website SingleMuslim.com, which works in partnership with Muslim Marriage Events, has more than 500,000 members worldwide, of which 130,000 signed up last year in the UK alone.

A third of those polled would prefer their future spouse to come from the same town or city.

"A typical family may wish their son or their daughter to marry somebody similar to them, their kind of culture be it Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian or whatever their background is; whereas we're not always able to relate to somebody from that 'back home' kind of background. So we're looking for somebody who has a similar mindset to us and the Internet is just one additional avenue" said Muhammad.

A considerable portion of Muslim men and women in Britain resort to a popular matchmaking website to look for spouses amid debates over the validity of internet marriages.

The website, called Single Muslim, described by its administrators as the world’s biggest in matchmaking services.

A recent poll by an interactive Muslim marriage website (SingleMuslim.com) revealed that a majority of the Muslims polled believed that they would personally not choose to practise polygamy given the choice.
